I was greatly honoured to be asked to be Lady Captain in 2021.
Being Lady Captain in the midst of an unforeseen pandemic brings unexpected challenges, but I am always aware that I am leading an astonishingly talented, enthusiastic and resourceful group of ladies! We are lucky to have a beautiful, deceptively easy, links course, level and well-drained, that is never (well, hardly ever) closed because of the weather.
We are a small section in comparison to many others in Somerset, but we punch above our weight in the County and manage to field two teams in the Bristol and District Lady Golfers Alliance, as well as a Friendly Team. At the last count there were 32 matches of various kinds scheduled in 2021. Not bad for a section of 63 playing ladies!
Tuesday is Ladies Day, but working ladies have tee times reserved on Saturdays as well.
We run qualifying competitions, both 9 hole and 18 hole, throughout the year, always off grass tees, and only very occasionally using temporary greens.
We have an increasing number of 9 hole members enabling those new to golf and those who no longer wish to play a full round, still to enjoy competitive golf.
As you might expect in a 129 year old club, we have many trophies available to be won throughout the year, for all handicap categories. The highlight of our year is the Ladies Club Championship day, when 7 trophies are awarded.
We also have teaching professionals to help your game whether on the driving range, in the teaching studio or on the course itself.
But it’s not all too serious: we run mixed ability teams and pairs events for all standards. Come and join us on our Away Day on May 13th at Honiton Golf Club, or Lady Captain’s day, on 27th July.
There was, pre-pandemic, a thriving social membership, enjoying a variety of events, and we are planning to resume these later in the year, Covid permitting.
But, whenever you come to visit, whether to play golf or to socialise, you can be sure of a warm welcome!
